The area boasts excellent walking opportunities with the Severn Way passing through the village. According to TripAdvisor, nearby Powis Castle (20 minutes away) ranks as the top attraction, followed by the Montgomeryshire Canal and the Centre for Alternative Technology.

Caersws has an interesting Roman history - excavations revealed it was once an important Roman fort called Mediomanum. The village was also the childhood home of poet John Ceiriog Hughes, whose work influenced Welsh cultural identity.

Sightseeing

Caersws sits in a prime spot for exploring mid-Wales. The village itself is small but packed with history - look out for the old railway station building, one of the oldest in Wales still in use. It's worth spending time just wandering around to spot the historic architecture.

Powis Castle (SY21 8RF, open 10am-5pm April-October) is a must-visit just 20 minutes away. This medieval castle has stunning terraced gardens and one of the finest collections of paintings and furniture in Wales. It scores 4.7/5 on TripAdvisor with visitors particularly praising the gardens.

The Montgomeryshire Canal offers lovely walks and the visitor centre at Welshpool (SY21 7AQ) provides maps of the towpath routes. The canal scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor with reviewers noting how peaceful it is.

For something different, head to the Centre for Alternative Technology (SY20 9AZ, open daily 10am-5pm). This eco-centre demonstrates practical solutions for sustainability. It scores 4.3/5 on TripAdvisor with many visitors saying they learned loads about renewable energy.

Pet Friendly

Many cottages in Caersws welcome dogs, making it perfect for a break with your four-legged friend. The surrounding countryside offers endless walking opportunities where dogs can run free.

The Severn Way footpath passes right through Caersws and provides miles of riverside walking. I've found most sections are away from roads making them safe for dogs off lead.

For refreshments, The Buck Inn in nearby Newtown (SY16 2BB) has a dog-friendly bar area and even offers treats for well-behaved dogs. They serve good pub grub too.

If you're visiting in summer, the River Severn has several shallow sections near Caersws where dogs can paddle safely. We recommend bringing towels for your cottage hot tub though - nobody wants a muddy dog jumping in!

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Caersws

The Roman Fort remains (SY17 5HH) might not look like much today, but this was once a major military installation. Archaeological digs have uncovered fascinating artifacts including pottery and coins. There's an information board explaining the site's significance. One visitor wrote: "Fascinating to stand where Roman soldiers stood nearly 2,000 years ago."

Llyn Clywedog Reservoir (SY18 6DF) is just 15 minutes north of Caersws and offers spectacular views. The dam itself is impressive at 72 metres high - the tallest concrete dam in Britain. There's a visitor centre explaining its construction and several walking trails around the water. Recent visitors say the views are "absolutely breathtaking" and worth the drive.

The Hafren Forest (SY18 6RG) contains the source of the River Severn, Britain's longest river. The forest has several marked trails ranging from easy 1-mile walks to the challenging 8-mile Source of the Severn Trail. The paths are well-maintained and the forest is home to red kites and buzzards. A TripAdvisor reviewer noted: "The walk to the source was magical - so peaceful and the views were amazing."

Is Caersws good for families with young children?

Yes! The gentle countryside is perfect for little explorers. Glansevern Hall Gardens (SY21 8AH) has a children's trail and plenty of space to run around. Many cottages with hot tubs have enclosed gardens where kids can play safely.

What's the best time of year to visit Caersws?

Spring and summer offer the best weather for exploring, but autumn brings spectacular colours to the forests. Winter can be magical if you're lucky with snow - there's nothing better than watching snowfall from your hot tub!

Are there any good restaurants in Caersws?

The village itself has limited dining options, but The Unicorn pub serves decent meals. For more choice, head to Newtown (15 minutes away) where you'll find everything from Indian restaurants to traditional Welsh pubs.

How far is Caersws from the coast?

The nearest coastal town is Aberystwyth, about 45 minutes' drive west. It has a lovely promenade, pier and beach - perfect for a day trip from your cottage.

Surprisingly good for a small village! Caersws has its own railway station on the Cambrian Line with connections to Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth. However, a car is recommended for exploring the countryside.

Absolutely! The River Severn offers excellent fishing, particularly for salmon and trout. Day tickets are available from the Caersws Angling Association. Llyn Clywedog is also stocked with rainbow trout.
